I have items that are high in some stats and lower in others. 

 

I can't work out what to sell and what to keep.

 

Also some of the items that I'm using have really good refinement items with them.

 

A tough choice.

It can be very tough. I have pieces that are plus 30 or better but I keep holding them because they are low in an area I am not willing to lose on. It is hard to get a piece that fits into your skill point build. I use my free washing machine once a day and hope for the best but I won't use the piece until the numbers line up the way I want. As for refinements.....I wait to upgrade that piece until I get something at least plus 40 or more if I am losing a great ability in the trade.

In this case, you could use your good items and level them by putting on some other items that are -1 to -5. I do that all the time

I don't know why I'm still holding on to some of my older things, they are rare and epic items but that doesn't make them any better than a common item.

You should put your special epic items in the storage box and save them for making movies.

Epic items that match with the movie title and also the location increase your movie rating. The best items are those which you earn by finishing parties or participating in conventions... That's why you should keep the best of those in your storage box. The skills that they carry are not important for filming. Just clothes.
