We had the same presumption as Barito had in the German Forum. If i remember correctly, Playata denied that there would be some sort of protection for those defending in a duel. They said, it would be a matter of probability.
And if you look closely, they might not be wrong. The whole fighting system is based on chances. Of course, Items like gadgets and missiles become stronger with every level and a character with a higher level will deal more damage to you than you will to him, but in the end, all fights are won by meeting the chances to hit, to dodge or to hit critcally. Yes, the basic stats are still the strongest. If you dodge a blow, there is no refinement that can help your opponent to still deal some damage to you. Yes, there is a refinement that deals damage over time, but that one already has to work before you dodged the opponents blow.
If you want to win duels, enhance your stats with refinements. Invest in your defense (Finesse) and your offense (Charisma). Keep your Stamina at a good third rank. Strength is good, but utterly useless, if you cannot hit your opponent. Use refinements that give you an extra opportunetly to dodge or to deal extraordinary high damage if you hit a critical blow. Use the refeinement on your gadget that enhances the missiles, Use the refinement for the head (I'm missing the correct name for that slot, but i guess you will know what I mean) that gives you the chance of hitting twice a round. Use the survival refinement for your shoes, If you cannot get a agrip on one of those, take a refinement that enhances one of the important stats. Don't go for standard refinements, that do something else than raising a stat. 2 or 3 % chance is nothing unless it's damage or the enhancement of a stat, but even then, if you can have better ones, take them. You will get these chance way to rarely - a normal battle doesn't take longer than 10 to 15 rounds. Take the rare or epic variants for refinements for any special ability granted by refinements.
Use time to your advantage. You do not have to put a refinement on everything you get, at the time you get it. If you are making two films a day, there's a chance that you will get something better soon. Concentrate on getting the right refinement for your gear and if that means that the item is going to stay in your inventory for a couple of days or until you find something even better, who cares?
