the refinements add or subtract from the percentage chance that a particular type of damage will be added to an attack or avoided from an opponents attack...

 

they do effect the fight, but are usually not the primary deciding factor...

What do the refinement items do? (Spanish Fly etc.) I've won duels without them and with them and I've lost against players with less refinement items than me. Do they really work?
