In tech news today - Flash has an end date in 2020

On Dec 31, 2020 Adobe will pull the plug on their beloved and be-hated software known as FLASH.

Countdown to 2020

In three and a half years, Adobe will stop developing and distributing Flash, said Govind Balakrishnan, vice president of product development for Adobe's Creative Cloud Ecosystem. Browser makers have been pushing hard to eject Flash, but Adobe couldn't move any faster because web standards weren't mature enough and Flash developers in education, gaming, streaming video and other industries need time to retool and rewrite their software, Balakrishnan said.

"We feel the standards have arrived, and now is the right time to announce our intention to pull the plug (on Flash)", Balakrishnan said.

What does this mean for you the BBE Player?

Little is known at this time, as the announcement is a mere 6 hours old, but the web based versions of Big Bang Empire (BBE) (playable on countless browsers) is a FLASH-BASED program.  And while there are still some 3+ years before FLASH officially goes away, there is already some speculation it might not go away...

One possibility is that the flash libraries could be donated to the programming community at large and become OPEN SOURCE.  But will an open source community embrace a language with so many security issues?

Playata's Next Move?

Perhaps the Playata team will develop a non-flash BBE alternative in the 3 years pending.   Maybe even bring the game to the masses on mobile and tablets (outside of Flash) in the same time frame?  Who knows - the future is bright, despite its uncertainty. (smug)

PS: There is presently a STEAM version of the BBE game in operation, but little is known by this moderator on what languages and technologies are being used there. Does anyone play on STEAM know?  :S
