I got the hunting instinct from the advent calendar. I have used it before sparingly. I didn't really like it all that much. It SEEMS convenient at first, but the hunting instinct targets the wrong missions when you pick "maximal notes per energy".
1) It ignores party tickets. A party ticket is by far more valuable than any other mission reward. Just flat out period! A ticket is 12 high reward missions for NO energy, plus three skills and guaranteed epic gear. If a party ticket is on the map, the hunting instinct MUST find it at highest priority.
2) While the hunting instinct properly counts the sell value of items, it ignores the expected value of a movie ballot. To be fair, I did too, for the longest time. But movie ballots can reward free skills. My suggestion is that hunting instinct value a movie ballot as:
(minimum cost of buying a new skill for the player) * (percent chance of getting a skill reward from a movie ballot)
3) I don't know how to value things like "holiday rewards". But the hunting instinct ignores them, perhaps appropriately. Maybe value a special macguffin item at something nominal, like 500 notes?
